Why was Texas last to free the slaves?

    Texas was the last state in the Confederacy to keep fighting. Even after Lee surrendered at Appomattox, there were still small battles in Texas. Finally, Texas surrendered too, and grudgingly did what they were told to do, including freeing their slaves.

    It wasn't. Slavery wasn't illegal in Kentucky until 1/1/1866.
