Is Houston (geographically, culturally and historically) a part of East Texas?

Please be very honest, Im just wondering because Houston is on the Southeast part of Texas and Houston was built on forested land, bayous, swamp (see wikipedia)and some areas on the northeast side of town is even more forested with piney trees, so i was wondering is Houston a part of East Texas or used to be part of East Texas before it became a major city or something?

Houston is part of the Gulf Coast Region of Texas. East Texas is part of the Piney Woods region. Some of the far northern suburbs of Houston overlap into the Piney Woods.
