MS in Biology, with research related to fish and invertebrate communities under acid-metal stressed conditions. I'm a former University instructor in Biological and Environmental Science, and Earth Science. I've worked for, and in cooperation with, state and federal agencies doing endangered species research and environmental assessments. I've been keeping aquaria for 30+ yrs, with experience in cold and tropical freshwater aquariums, US native fish, and 9 yrs. experience with reefkeeping. I've kept a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, and managed a reptile/fish department in a pet store. I own 20+ tanks and currently have saltwater communities, freshwater communities, and 1 brackish set up at home, plus lots that are used for quarantine tanks or small "species" tanks. I also keep amphibians and reptiles, and have two outdoor ponds. I love anything that gets me outdoors - hiking, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, photography, and enjoying the scenery.

  • Fish Quiz #1 - Easy (?) 10 points!?

Test your knowledge and get 10 pts for being the first to get all correct (or most correct before question goes to voting)! (Okay, VG, I admit I stole your idea from a few months ago).

    A few rules -

    * For the 1st 20 min, only people without top contributor banners may post answers.

*If the question is still open after 20 min, people with banners who are NOT in the top 10 contributors may answer too.

*If question is still open after 40 min, anyone can answer.

Today's question: I'm in a fish store and see a tank of fish called "ranchus" and another type called "lionheads".

    1. What species are they?

    2. Characteristics? How are they different?

    3. How big will they get?

    4. What's the correct name for the cap?

    5. If I get one of each, what size tank I should buy to keep them as adults?

    6. Best water temperature?

    7. Can mine spawn?

    8. How can I tell which is the male?

    9. What's the white fuzzy stuff on the one's lip?

    10. Give link to source for treating #9.

  • What the.......?????

..HECK is a "MM party dance"?! Now THAT'S something I'd love to see (I think?)!

Okay, for a "REAL" question - what's the name for the color pattern of bettas where the scales are outlined in a different color? Someone asked this in a previous edit and I don't think you caught it - maybe I'll go back and reword your answer plus the added info and get THOSE 10 pts. away from you at least! Think I know, but I've only seen the term applied to yellows, so want to check if it applies to all colors before I answer.

    to MM:

Congrats on the spawning - and for the "Top Answerer" for fish.

Now take a break - your wife and kids (the human ones, too) miss you. Give the rest of us a chance for some points! You up for tenure and using this in your community service portfolio, or what????? (just kidding - you deserve the honors!)

  • "Top contributor" banners??

Are these based on number of answers given, number of best answers, or what? Will these bias "best answer" choices in favor of more "long-term contributors" over new folks? Does it lead questioners to favor number of answers over quality of answers? How do you feel about these?
