  • How does American Airlines handle no-shows?

    I know they charge a hefty $200 cancellation fee if you call to cancel in advance. I also know that your ticket is forfeit - though that point is moot for non-refundable tickets (assume that there is no way a refund is possible).

    In the case of a non-refundable ticket, the airline technically isn't losing money since the seat is paid for (one could even argue the airline saves on fuel).

    The question is: what can they do (and what do they do) about no-shows?

    Context: I'm studying the cost of air travel and I'm trying to understand how pricing is calculated for different types of tickets.
