Instead of dying out, Neanderthals went to a parallel dimension. In the events of the book, they were back and invading Tudor (?) England. The main character was half neanderthal and half homo sapiens, and was the son of the invading army's general. He had red hair.

It was about a dragon who was sleeping under a hill. Every once in a while, bubbles of power would come up through the ground, and if someone was caught in one, they'd get powers (like the ability to see people's souls represented as animals, and to fly). This happened to the main character, and his older sibling and a priest wanted to stop the dragon, who was evil.
