The SMURFS all look alike and dress alike while living in a commune-type of environment. SMURFs all offered their their specialized skill in support of the common good while following the rules and regulations passed down to them from their leader, the red-clad, bearded "Papa" Smurf (possibly in reference to Karl Marx). The enemy of the SMURFs was the evil wizard, Gargamel, who threatened their way of life by trying to catch the SMURFs and turn them into gold (Capitalism?). I believe it may also be possible that S.M.U.R.F. might actually be an anagram for Socialist Males Under Red Father.
