Which is better, HT Technology or Dual Core Technology?

The HT technology means that you can run multiple threads belonging to the same process (in layman's terms a program). A thread is a subset of instructions belonging to the full process. This concept exploits multi-tasking. It may happen during program execution that the program requires I/O operations such as data entry through the keyboard. So instead of wasting CPU cycles, the processor may be assigned the next set of instructions of program thread for multi-tasking.

The Dual-core processors technology takes the paradigm to a different level. Now two processors can handle program execution, which means more multi-tasking. It can be possible when one processor only does the graphics processing whereas the other processor can do normal processing.

However, the choice of a HT or Dual-core technology depends upon whether the application supports that technology. If the OS itself or the program doesn't support HT or Dual-core everythign is a sheer waste of money.

I would suggest that if you have the money, go for the dual-core processors snce one year down the line or in 2007, there might be applications that take advantage of it....Show more

Dual Core mean that there is two processors on a single chip. It literally is having two processors in your computer. HT stand for Hyper Threading (for Intel chips), or Hyper Transport (for AMD chips). They mean the same thing. HT causes a single processor, under certain conditions, to emulate the functionality of a Dual Core processor. Dual Core is better then HT, since it really is having two processors, where as HT can sometimes act as though you have two processors. There are Dual Core chips with HT. In that case your computer has two processors, but they can sometimes act as four processors - if the conditions are right. These are VERY expensive. In case your wondering when a HT processor can act as two processors, it depends on how different the tasks you are performing are (to the processor, not you). If the tasks are very similar then a HT processor will act as one, but if they're different then a HT processor can "double up" and act as two....Show more

Amd dual-core vs Intel hyper-threading...??
(AMD has hyper-transport ...it works with dual-core so I assume this is not an issue...)
Factor in the front-side bus speed which multiplies processor speed to give true system speed. Many AMD mobo's have mucho-fast 2000 fsb...220% faster than 800 speed...check the specs also for type of memory supported and in what amount. Often the AMD boards accept better/more memory.

Dual core is better by far. Even if applications are not written for multiple cores, you will still see the benefits of dual core processors, as multi-tasking will be sped up.

Also, I'd recommend you look at AMD over Intel CPUs (depending on your use). If gaming, definitely AMD....Show more
