Do online petitions really work? Are there any examples of them having an effect on a cause?

It just seems to me that written petitions have more validity from them than from the more anonymous looking online petitions. What examples are there that online petitions actually work?

My petitions Group has 5 million members. Yes, they work. By next election we hope to have 10 million members. Bono does a great job as the spokes person.
