Depending on where you are staying...I would start with the monuments/buildings first. If I were staying in mid-town (which likely you are), I would go to the Empire State Building...the earlier the better. Then...from there I would walk EAST towards the East River (on 34th Street) and take the water Taxi...which will take you all the way down to Battery Park...here you can get off and buy tickets to the ferry taking you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Now while you are on the water taxi you will pass the Williamsburg, the Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridges...I believe it is the Brooklyn that you want to see and possibly cross (the Manhattan bridge is just a bunch of steel...pretty boring). Though on your relaxing water taxi ride to Battery Park, you can make your decision on which bridge you'd like to see. Anyway, you return to Battery Park after already seeing the Statue of Liberty and there are plenty of interesting things downtown...there is Wall Street, of course the World Trade Center site, Century 21 (discount designer clothes shopping), City Hall (which offers free tours, all you have to do is make a reservation through the nyc.gov website)...from City Hall you can see the Woolworth Building, one of the first "sky-scrapers" in NYC (before the Empire State Bldg.), and the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge is right there...next to City Hall. The cool thing is if you only want to walk one way over the bridge the subway is right there...you can take it either to Brooklyn or vice versa...though if you are enjoying the weather and the walking...then happy trails! The double decker bus...I think is a lazy persons way to travel...the city offers so much, but if you are driving in a bus, you are never going to really experience it...though if you want to do that...be my guest...though I have no specific information on bus tours...sorry. Not a big fan of the bus tours in NYC...they are annoying to most resident NewYorkers...ok, maybe just to me! Well, enjoy your stay...

Greyline tours offers an 81/2 hour tour for about $80 and it covers land and water. Go online to find it. I am taking it this August.
