Spare petrol (jerry cans), tools, and a few spare tyres! Plus, lots of water. Once you get off the eastern seaboard you'll find it can be a long way between petrol stations, etc. Plus...out in the bush & desert, you'd be surprised how many times you'll get to places and find the servo shut by 4pm or not open til midday! Or...not find one for a good 400km+.

Swags are great too...it's the best night to sleep out under the stars in the Simpson Desert if you get there... :-)

Have a great trip! If I can help at all, email me at robforster15@hotmail.com :-)

My bro travelled NZ in a rented motorhome to visit distant relatives who we'd never met. He took out the corner of the roof of a cousin's house with it. Don't drive too close to overhangs! Other than that, he found that everyone was so friendly to their long lost American cousin, that he actually didn't need to ever sleep in it! A car would have been a better choice.

If time is an issue the distances are so big that lack of power and speed can be annoying. Otherwise, have a great time. Those kids are lucky little vegemites. It will be a great experience.

Heat and cooling.

Melamine crockery - looks better than plastic, but is still light weight and less likely to break.

An electric frying pan is a must. You can cook outside with one and eliminate smells.

Have fun on your journey. How old are your children?
