We are looking to hire a pet sitter when we go on vacation. They all seem to offer the same services and charge around the same fees. The ones we've considered all belong to pet-sitting associations that have guidelines for membership. How do we know which ones are the best?

I worked as a pet sitter for many years, and I would always meet with the owners and pets to see what was and was not expected of me. I was usually asked for references from other people I pet sat for. I suggest you do the same. Membership in pet sitting associations does not mean much...anyone can join one for a fee, actually meeting the sitter and talking to other clients is going to tell you more about them and how they get along with your pet. Good Luck.
I have never hired a pet sitter, but I have been one for friends and family. The best thing to do is to have a trusted friend or family member who is friends with the pet come over at least once a day while you are gone to care for the pet and make the house look lived in and get the mail.
The next best thing might be a pet hotel or boarder, like your vet. They charge a nightly fee and make sure your pet is well cared for. Some cost more than others, depending on the services they provide.
Also, when looking for a friend, don't overlook your neighbors. You might find someone you can trust that you never thought of before.
I agree with a previous responder that belonging to an association doesn't merit much. I too used to pet sit. Check the references and see if they have insurance (I know it is the last thing you want to think about, losing a pet, but they also enter your home. You are entrusting them with a lot!). I now have immediate friends and family do the pet-sitting. I know they will look after them and call me right away if there is a problem. Good luck!
I have never hired a pet sitter luckily everyone I know are animal lovers and don't mind keeping my pet. You can go to your local vet and put them in boarding. that way you know that animal is in good hands. If considering the pet sitting I'm sure you can get references or do it like with a child or something when you r looking for a sitter. they should be able to provide it for you
I would be sure to meet with them personally and if one person would be the one coming over, making sure you meet with THAT person...and have them meet your pets. Get references either from them or if you know someone who has had a professional pet sitter in the past...
