Why does Yahoo show me as online in Messenger when reading Yahoo webpages?

I am reading my e-mail on Yahoo or doing Yahoo Answers and the Yahoo Messenger of my friends shows me as online. But I am not running Yahoo Messenger at that time so they type things like, "I see you online why don't you reply?" It's really annoying, why can't they use a different signal for using the Messenger itself?

It's running in the background. First check in the lower righthand bottom corner for the little icon, click on it and close. If you don't see it there, go to processes in your task manager and manually end process that way.
