are there any cell phone services out there that don't require a two year contract?

I have been on AT&T and since Cingular took over they are pressuring me to get new service through them. Now they are going to charge me $5/phone/month if I don't upgrade. I don't want a two year contract. And I'm not so keen to buy minutes/month.

You would be better off with a new phone. This new phone would give you better coverage.

In general, when the battery does not hold the charge very well anymore, it is just as cheap to get a new phone with a PLAN, then buy a new battery or buy a new phone without a plan.

DO THE MATH, you are going to stick with them for 2 years anyway. What were you thinking.... getting their GO PHONE service and pay as you go?

Maybe you should check cell phone services in your area for equal or better coverage. If you find one as good, BUY IT.

For instance, if T-mobile's coverage in your area is just as good, you will get ALOT more minutes for the BUCK. Check their website at http://www.t-mobile.com and click on COVERAGE. Enter your zip code, and zip codes of other towns in your area that you frequent. If their REAL coverage is good, then SWITCH.

You only need to sign 2 years contact if you want the free phone. Buy a used phone from ebay and bring it to the Cingular store to get activated. You can probably keep your old number.

I believe T Mobile has a 1 yr contract available. If you're looking for no contract at all, I know Cricket (http://www.mycricket.com/plans/) has a prepaid service with unlimited minutes every month, no contract involved but they are not a nation-wide company as of yet. (http://www.mycricket.com/coverage/) There may be other companies out there, similar though.
Hope this helps!

T-mobile has a 1yr. contract. The coverage is pretty good, and they give you lots of minutes too! :-)
