I know this is really simple, but, how do you make grilled cheese sandwiches?
I am a 'culinary challenged' dad. I feel silly and embarrased, but my son asked me to make grilled cheese sandwiches and I'm not quite sure how to do it. It seems simple. But, is there correct or better way to do it? How about some suggestions regarding the kind of cheese, etc. Thanks alot. (Hungry but dumb.)

OK You will need: 2 slices of bread, 1 slice of cheese & butter. Skillet. Spatula. Stove on Medium High Heat!
Butter ONE slice of bread. Place the bread BUTTER SIDE DOWN into the pan.
Open the cheese up and place that on TOP of the bread.
Butter the other slice of bread. Place that bread BUTTER SIDE UP.
Cook until bottom side is brown. Flip over & cook until other side is brown. Remove from heat place on plate cut & eat. Delicious!!!
Ingredients: Bread, mayo, american cheese slices; non-stick skillet and heat-resistant spatula (preferably not metal, tho)
Steps: 1. Heat non-stick skillet as if you were going to fry eggs; medium heat 2. Spread mayo on ONE side of two slices of bread; put one of them into the pan, mayo-side down (mayo browns very well and will not scorch like butter will) 3. Unwrap 2 cheese slices and put onto the bread in the pan; place the second slice of bread on top MAYO SIDE UP 4. Check to see if the bottom bread is toasty brown; when it is, flip the sandwich and wait for the other side to brown also 5. The cheese should melt during this time; if you want to melt the cheese more, ten seconds in the microwave will do the trick. (DO NOT LEAVE IT IN THE PAN - IT WILL BURN)
The grilled cheeses are greasy to hold, but they are yummy and pretty much like you would get at a restaurant.
I learned to make a mean grilled cheese from my dad. We have a flat pan especially for sandwiches but you just need some kind of pan. Butter the outside of both pieces of bread...as little or as much as you want. Preferably more butter because it tastes better, of course! :) The best kind of cheese for grilled cheese honestly is Kraft Singles. They're pretty gross cold but they taste better melted and they melt quickly. If you want to mix it up, use more than one kind of cheese. Once I made a grilled cheese with a kraft single, parmesan, swiss, and colby jack because those were what I had in the fridge and it was very good. Anyway, butter the bread on the outsides and stick the cheese in the middle, then put it on the pan and flip it around until it's nicely browned and crispy. It's good to add turkey or ham, too.
I like using medium cheddar; a lot of younger kids like American cheese or mild cheddar. I like the slices to be a little more than 1/8" thick so when I cut the sandwich the cheese will over flow a little so I can dip my chips in it. Cut enough slices to cover the bread or a single slice of American will do the job.
Of course you need two slices of bread, some like the bread plain, I like to put a thin layer mayonnaise on the inside of my sandwich.
After you apply the mayo or choose not to - lay the cheese on one bread slice (A variation that some people like is to add a slice of tomato.) then cover with the other bread slice. Pre-heat your pan on just below medium heat.
Lightly butter one side of your sandwich, when pan is warm (hold hand over pan about 1 - 1 1/2" to test) place sandwich butter side down.
As your sandwich is starting to cook, lightly butter the dry side facing up. Let your sandwich grill for about 2 min., use a spatula to check for golden brown. Flip sandwich with spatula when 1st side is golden brown then let second side grill for about 2 min. again until golden brown.
When golden brown, turn off heat and serve! Enjoy!
Don't use butter it's extra fattening. Just spray the outside of the sandwich with Pam cooking spray. Stick cheese in the inside(American or Swiss is most kid friendly). And either put it on a George Forman Grill or in a skillet. Cook until both sides are brown. Oh and white bread is good to use on grilled cheese sandwiches.
