What would case the speedometer on a 1996 Honda Accord to work sometimes and then sometimes not work at all?

that model does not have a cable. a quick check to see if its the VSS of the speedo is when you drive and the speedo quits see if the cruise control still works. If it does the VSS is good and the speedo itself it bad if not replace the VSS vehicle speed sensor on the trans...Show more

Hmm, I've seen this before, and I have to caution you that it is quite often a sign that someone was messing around with the odometer. Possibly disconnecting the cluster to prevent miles from adding on, or attempting to roll back the odo.
Did you just get this vehicle? Have you removed the cluster and checked the wiring? Are the miles rolling right? They probably stop when the speedo is inop!!

sounds like your speedometer cable is loose. Your local mechanic should be able to tighten it up....Show more
