Why is steak so expensive in the US?

I live in southamerica where beef is not expensive. It's something you eat almost everyday.

It isnt that expensive, it just depends on what cut of meat you get. There are cuts that are "better" than others, so in turn they are more expensive.

I have never had the South American beef, so I don't know if it's the same... I was in Central America and had beef there. It was in no way comparable to the beef we have in the US. Our's is much thicker, and much better cut of meat. Frankly, our's tastes better (though maybe that's just cause I'm not used to Central American steak).

In America, we have a capatilist economy, which translates into people can charge whatever they want for anything they sell. If you can sell beef for $2.50 a pound, then why sell it for $1.00 a pound? The point of starting a business is to make money; why make less when you can make more?

Supply and demand curves - my dude. You guys may be net exporters of beef and the US may be net importers.
