It is very hard to change other people's ways. You can change your own - but you must be very strong to overcome your own thoughts. If you are very bold and drastically change your surroundings you will have a good chance of becoming a new person with a new outlook.

It is very hard to do. There is a way that you can go ahead and be a trail blazer, and dare to take a chance on a new progressive thought or idea. Our country was founded, because the people going West, made The Oregon trail, and pushed West, and they did not worry or care about "deep rooted" ways of their forefathers. Someone has to be the first to take the step of a thousand mile journey. It takes courage, and guts to step out of the lines.

positive reinforcement. a guy did an experiment once where this dog only thought he should eat when he was hungry. He taught the dog to eat anytime he heard a bell. I don't know about you but i think eating habits are pretty deep rooted... so yea... use a bell :-)

NLP or Neuro linguistic programming.

It teaches you how to relearn and remember your past differently.

e.g. take a past memory that was bad - now remember the details differently. Change the people, shrink them, make their voices softer, make you actions stronger, re-remember all aspects and sensations of the memory with you as the director of the actions.

When you apply this over a long period of time, you reprogram the memory and this can help you shift your ways of thinking.

What ever you want to change , do the opposite 21 times in succession
then that becomes the habit .
