Hi!
What kind of Japanese do you want to learn? If you simply want to learn to speak and not care an inch how things are written and why things are said the way they are said, buy Teach yourself instant Japanese + the cassettes. It has the most usable vocabulary and expressions but very, very little of the language structure and nothing of writing.
If, in contrast, you are interested of why things are said the way they are and of the writing Japanese for busy people is reasonable. If you tackle the kanas = the syllable letters first and then buy the Kana version of the Japanese for busy people. They have a teach yourself the kanas separately.
If you aim to go to Japan, I would recommend learning the kanas as these 46 times 2,(there are two parallel systems, the other was used by women and the other by men originally; now the other is for Japanese words (mostly) and the other for foreign words (mostly) funny looking syllable signifying "letters" are not terribly hard to learn and you are waaay ahead of figuring anything out in Japan. Even if you don't aim to learn the Chinese characters=Kanjis the kanas help a lot If you happen to get interested in Kanjis try learning Kanjis by James W Heisig. He has very interesting ideas for learning the 2000 the Japanese use (not 20 000 like the Chinese)
You could go to japantimes.com web page, they have Japanese learning pages and links and you can ask their advice of learning Japanese.
Best of success

Pimsleur is the best for speaking a language. And you can learn it fast! It really is amazing. It is a bit expensive unless you download it illegally off of a p2p service. Not that I did that.. just heard of people who did. Kinda sad as it drives the price up.
