I will need to have 2 in my lower spine fixed in about 5 years ,im just wondering if anyone can give me a head up about pain ,recovery times ,problems etc

I can only say good luck to you and I hope you are on the lucky side!!
I know of two people who had to go through the type of surgery you described.
One of them was lucky and was able to go back to work without pain after about 3 to 6 months and is still happy today without problems.
The other one was unlucky and never recovered from that. Had to retire from work at a young age and can't live without strong painkillers until today, not being able to do anything that requires some strength and activity. If done, the person is gone for the next two or three days..
So before you undergo surgery, check whether there is really absolutely no other alternative and check about the track record of the clinic before you go. The two people I'm talking about went to two different places. Unfortunately, the unlucky one only got to know about the bad track record of the 2nd clinic when it was too late...
