I agree at one time IT WAS Nero.
The Bible says it is the Number of "a man." However Gematria or "holy numbers" IS a part of Bible Lore.
1 is the number of completion, of God.
3 is the number of Emphasis. ALL things important in the Bible were stated 3 times. Take today for instance, "hear ye, hear ye, hear ye," or when calling the peoples of Israel together, they would summon 3x. Also, any statement would be read, 3x, etc. Take the 120 years that Noah had to plant the trees, harvest them, cut the wood and build the boat, 40 x 3 = 120 years. Again, EMPHASIS.
6 is man's number and represents imperfection. Falling short. Especially falling short of Heavenly Perfection.
7 is Heavenly Perfection.
40 is the number of Spiritual Crisis or Spiritual Warfare. Forty years for Moses and the people to wander in the Desert. Forty days and forty nights for it to rain for Noah and his family. Forty days of fasting BEFORE Christ was tempted. Forty, well, you get the idea. It always goes back to spiritual tribulations. What numbers aren't 40 are divisable by 40.
So, take the number 6-6-6.
6 = man
3 = emphasis so . . .
6x3 = 6-6-6 = mans imperfections empasized 3 times.

I don't think 666 is the literal "sign of the beast." I take it to mean accepting a mark or an implant on your hand or forehead for the purpose of making purchases in the "new world order" that will be set up by the AntiChrist.
This is not so far-fetched in a society that is already paying for everything with debit and/or credit cards. Grocery stores all have bar code scanners. Our pets are being implanted with ID chips. So the technology is already in place.
Believe it or not, I'm not religious. I'm an agnostic. But just to be on the safe side, I have no intention of ever being "marked" to make buying easier. *grin*

It has since been discovered recently through historians re-examining the original papyrus or a new one that the number of the beast that historians thought was 666 and refered to the Emperor Nero who persecuted christians, actually is the number 616 which historians now believe refers to the Emperor Caligula. Christians could not come right out and say that they thought the Roman emperors were beasts. So they put it in numbers. When you add up the letters of Caligula (in the original language number form) it adds up to 616. So the beast was a person who is already long dead years ago.See link below. It was on TV also.
