Is batching really inferior than processing piece by piece?

A basic principle of the Lean Thinking arena is that batching our processes (waiting to fill a certain quota before processing) is inferior to working one piece at a time.
I need to know the reasoning behind this and if it applies to healthcare.

You can not have a blanket hypothesis to be applied as true in all cases, you need to check each area on its own merits.

It is all in the application. One size doesn't fit all. Each has a benefit.
