The bulk of the movie was shot in and around Nogales Arizona because, in 1955, the real-life Oklahoma was very heavily farmed and developed that suitable areas for the setting of the movie were scarce. They needed rural and undeveloped areas which more resembled the turn of the century setting of the musical.
Filming locations also included: The Green Cattle Co. ranch in San Raphael Valley, Arizona and San Rafael Ranch State Park also in Arizona, and some filming in New Mexico.
