an assist is the principal pass that contributes directly to a field goal. The pass must be a major part of the play. Only one assist may be awarded for each field goal. The decision rests with the judgment of the official game statistician. Dribbling by the scorer is irrelevant.

RE:
How does a player get credit for an assist in basketball?

If you pass the ball to another player and he scores without putting the ball on the floor to dribble, that is if he shoots and makes it without having to dribble, then you are credited with an assist. Just as good as scoring in my book.

its not just for a pass and a successful basket, its
a pass and a shot without moving. if you pass and the other
person drives, your assist goes away. but if you pass and they are not moving and standing there, and make it, you get an assist.
that is why it is overrated, assists, because the other player
can drive, you lose ur assist, or they miss.~
