What are your thoughts on the pet food recall? Are your pets safe?
I was a bit concerned over the recent recall on pet food products. I do buy some of the brands listed, and was glad to find out our cans did not have the same expiration dates as the ones listed on the recall notice. Whew, that was a relief. Is there a process the food manufacturer follows such as testing their products to ensure their are no contaminants.

I have been a responsible pet owner for many years. This issue of unsafe pet food is truly scary. I have trusted many of the products listed in the recall. My 13 year old Golden Ret. surley would not survive kidney failure. I would hope that this will be a lesson to our pet food suppliers. we value our pets, we trust our vets and our pet food suppliers to see that our pets recieve the best nutrition and safety in their food.I am so thankful to the internet and the information provided so that i can protect my pets to the the best of my ability. How bad one would feel knowing their pet died from being given a meal.....
I come to found out that mighty dog dog food is also being recalled by Purina, I went to their web site to check and see if I could find anything else that was not listed over at food menu, and sure enough it was.
What gets to me is that these dog and cat food were first notice way back in December, one would think that the recall would of been sooner.
Some of the brands that are listed I had already fed to my pets months ago, and so now I am wondering even though they ate the food a while back, would any of that food been harmful and if so would there be long term ill effects later, this and like so many of us, we just simply do not know...
OMG!!! I have a 5 year-old Siberian Husky and I was lucky that I don't (well.. can't afford to) buy canned dog food. What really got me is when I went to the manufacturer's website. On there were listed some really high-end dog foods and the regular run-of-the-mill store brand dog foods. Are we paying extra for the same food that people are buying at bargain basement prices?
And what EXACTLY was in the dog food that could have caused a dog or cat to have kidney failure?! This pet food recall has seriously made me to reconsider my choices in pet food. Are the major brands all that great or can i get a locally made dog food that's just as good. =o.0=
Yes it is very scary because so many varieties were effected, even the expensive stuff like Iams and Science Diet. I had just bought some pouches from HEB and I checked the expiration dates and they did not match, but the product codes did match with the recalled ones. So, don't just go by the expiration date, check the UPC codes also. Thank goodness I had not fed any of the food to my dog. I just got a new chihuahua and I was going to test and see if he would eat the wet food, but I had not got around to trying it yet. It scares me very badly. What is safe anymore? In our local town several dogs died after eating Beneful bought from Walmarts in December, but when they had it tested by Purina, they said it was fine. So, why did the dogs die right after eating the Beneful for the first time? I am afraid to feed my dogs any commercial pet food and I have been cooking them boiled chicken and beef mixed with rice. They love it and I guess I will just keep doing that for now. .....Please recheck your cans of food.
What people failed to notice is that this was a VOLUNTARY recall by the manufacturer, not to downplay the situation (I work for a vet). You would not believe the mass hysteria this announcement has created. This food had only been produced for approx. 3 months, I had people calling me today hysterical because their pet had been eating the food for 8-10 years and of course it started having symptoms as soon as the press release was aired. PEOPLE WAKE UP!! By all means, if your animal is showing signs of RENAL failure please take him or her to a veterinarian as soon as possible, but the likely hood I believe is slim to none. My sympathies to the families that have been affected by this.
