Can someone tell me the real story of the Spartans vs. the Persians? (movie 300)?
I saw 300 last night and it was amazing!!! But all lot of reviews say that is it historically incorrect. I know the information about the spartans growing up right, but what about the war story? What parts were fact, or part of the acual story, and what parts were fiction?

The Persians wanted to conquered Greece. In 490 Dareios (Xerxes father) tried but the Atheneans won the battle of Marathon.( A Greek soldier , Feidipidis, run from Marathon to Athens after the battle to say to the civilians that we won. He died when he arrived and after he said "nenikikamen" "we won". This is the Marathon we run today) In 480 Xerxes tried again. Greeks gather at the Thermopyles (Hotgates) with the Spartans to lead them. Greek army was 7000 and the Persians 1.700.000. Spartans were the best warriors but of course all the Greeks are great warriors when they fight for their country. Xerxes asked from Leonidas to give their weapons and he answered 'Molon Lave" (come and get them). The battle lasted for 3 days and the Persians had great loses, not even the 'Immortals" could won. Then a traitor appeared in front of Xerxes, his name was Efialtis. He lead the "Immortals" from a path behind the Greek lines. When Leonidas learned it he send away the rest of the Greeks and remain there with his 300 Spartans and 700 Thespies. They fought great, Leonidas was killed and a great battle began arround his body. Four times the Persians attack and four times the Spartans manage to defend and keep the body of their king. Finaly they were killed by arrowes. And yes the phrase "so we will fight in shade" was really told.
The movie was quite fake, it had mythical creatures in it which were not real, and it did make it a little exagerated. King Xerxes did exist ,adn it was true that 300 Spartans did fight close to millions of Persians. But the Persians were not well trained, and they were no ready to fight the Spartans who were WAY more battle ready than the Perisans were. The only reason the Persians had more troops was becuase they forced recruits to join there army. The Spartans did not, and they also TRAINED HARD, which made them tougher then the Persians, and WAY more inspired. So yes it was overall a pretty acurate movie. But there was some parts that were way overdone. Oh, and the Spartans WON!! Hope this helped!!!
The story begins in 492 B.C when Persians wanted to extend their territory and conquer more areas. Mardonius, a Persian strategist, was the first who tried to conquer Greece. More and more attacks were being held by the Persians to Greek people. (As you know, Sparta and Athens were the biggest and strongest Greek cities at that time) Sparta was known about her army, the strongest one in Greece and Athens for her navy the biggest one. ... -----Thermopyles(Heatgates)..... Xerxis, the new king of Persia, wanted to conquer Greece. At 480 B.C he and his army fought against Spartans and Plataies. The chief of the Greek people, was the king of Sparta Leonidas. He and his army easily were beating Persians, because of the area. Thermopyles we to mountains closed together. As a result, too little Persians could move through these "Gates" a time. Greeks with arrows could defend themselves and everything showed that they will win. Efialtis, was a Greek that said to Xerxis the secret way to reach Leonidas and surround his army.... Leonidas understood the what Xerxis would do and said to the other Greeks go away, only 300 Spartans and 700 Plataies left behind.... Xerxis said, when he surrounded Leonidas, give me your weapons and I will let you live. Then Leonidas said "Molon Lave"(Come to take them by yourself). Leonidas and his army was killed and died holding what he swered , to go to win or die bravely.....
