How can I play World of Warcraft for free? I know it costs money but what can I do in the game to make money?

OK so the massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft is free and generally is hack safe, so how can I join in on the fun without having to pay?  I don't want to cheat or anything, I would gladly do stuff in the game to earn my keep, I am just curious what I could do?

Private servers may be free, I think. 
They may not have the tech support and loot that the standard game has.
Somehow, I think it would not be the same game.
