The children's book market is the most difficult to crack. As a senior editor from Harper Collins told me recently, 40% of the market is celebs writing books - like Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis. 40% is existing successful childrens authors like Eric Carle, JK etc. and about 15% is reprints of old classics - which doesnt leave much room for new authors. His best advice was BE DIFFERENT - don't send us anything similar to what is already out there. Not an easy thing to do, but it can be done.

I know of very few agents who read childrens' books now. You would have to look through Writers Market and see who is. I think they have a children's version of Writers Market now - check at your bookstore. There may also be small publishers putting out childrens' books, again Writers Market would tell you that.

You dont pick your illustrator, the publisher assigns one to your book if it is accepted, What you do is send a query in the exact format that the publisher/agent request in their submission guidelines - when you find some that are accepting manuscripts. Many will say they do not accept unsolicited material, so dont even bother sending - you will end up in the trash bin.

It's a tough search and will take you a lot of time, but good luck. Pax- C.

Publishing a ebook is convenient in this day and age with the arrival of on-line publishing, self publishing and virtual publishing. Do you understand that the youngest writer was once four years historic? With the proper steerage, angle and of direction, ebook in hand - you're simply to your strategy to fitting the following bestseller. :) I say well success! :)

All publishers of children's books use their own illustrators, so you don't have to worry about that.

You have to start by getting and agent. You can find a list of reputable ones in the book already recommended.
