Myth, Folklore, or Superstition..what*s it underlying meaning?

I have heard all my life (45 years) that it is bad luck to cut a newborn/toddler*s hair BEFORE their first birthday. My grandson will be turning one year old on May 22nd, 2007. My daughter asked me this afternoon what the *bad luck* was supposed to be, and I couldn*t answer her. Come on now Mom*s, Dad*s, Grandparent*s, Aunt*s, Uncle*s, or anyone who can help settle this in her mind. (Her grandma threatened to whoop her backside if she got the baby*s hair cut before his birthday)

I think it may stem from the fear that the baby may not make it to it's 1st b-day. Before the 20th century, 50% of all babies born in the west did not make it until the 1st birthday. There are many superstitions about babies for the first year, some cultures don't even name a baby until one year has passed.
