I will get a new computer and want to use Open Office because it is free and the applications I develop with it can be used by those I want to share them with easily. How does Base rate? Is it good? Is there anything I have to know before I make this step? I do fine doing anything with Access.

I admit that Open Office - words and spreadsheet (calc) almost perfect, i've know it cause i've use it,
but Open Office-base is zero compare to Ms Access.
Open Office-base, it's very different with Ms Access.
if you have some knowledge in Ms access, stick to Ms Access. don't wasting your time to learn Base.

I am a long time Access user (dating back to the old Access 2 days) so your question caught my eye.
After reading some reviews (2nd URL in the first answerer's response) , I would avoid it like the plague until it earns a much better track record.
I am not trying to discourage you from trying it, just offering my opinion.
