This procedure is very effective for early disease that has not yet progressed to bone collapse; it may even prevent collapse. Core decompression may also be used for someone younger than 50 whose bone has collapsed; this treatment may delay the need for a total joint replacement by several years because the person's pain is relieved or decreased. If core decompression or bone grafting is performed before the bone collapses, it can help to prevent serious joint damage.

Avascular necrosis of the knee and many other joints. I had a replacement of that knee, but there are many other options for the treatment, some surgical and some not surgical. Yahoo has a group (osteonecrosis) group listed in their forums. There's a photo of osteonecrosis/avascular necrosis of the hip.

There are also some docs who do a better job treating osteonecrosis than others and people tell their stories and give their opinions as to WHY! Annie
