A comment/add-on to the above:

A woman I used to work with when I was in the Silicon Valley had a fairly traditional Indian wedding, complete with the very cool henna work on her hands, feet & such. She told me that it's a tradition that the new bride gets waited upon while getting her henna done, but also that until it fades after the wedding she's fairly exempt from housework (don't know how common this was). Thing is, she was very good at being sneaky & doing touchups to her henna over time, so it lasted rather longer than normal.

That's kind of the nice thing about it - little touchups from time to time can keep it fresh & nice looking for a very long time. Oh, and supposedly lots of heat helps to set it initially; going dancing & getting all hot & sweaty after an application gives you very dark staining - if you can keep from knocking the henna paste off.

As a professional henna artist I can tell you that on average a henna design lasts 2-3 weeks. Please do not ever get black henna done as it is a chemical that is placed with the henna to dye the skin unnaturally black.

Natural henna dyes reddish brown to black cherry tones especially if its good quality. Of course where you place the design on your body depends on the stain results as well. The thicker the skin the darker the color, the thinner the skin the lighter the color.

one to five weeks depending on the quality of the henna, the experience of the artist, and how often you wash it.

Edit notes...the first respondent said 7-10 days. Then suddenly changed to all this stuff. If you think you are going to get points pulling crap like that on your edits, don't hold your breath. If you don't know answers and then have to go look them up and then copy all this stuff from the net, best to leave the answers to those who know.

Your natural henna tattoo will last between 1-6 weeks and your colored henna tattoo will last between 2-10 days depending on how it is applied and where it is applied. Areas of the skin that tend to be more oily will have shorter lasting results. For a longer lasting henna tattoo apply the henna to a relatively non-oily area of the skin.

SUGGESTIONS AND TIPS FOR TREATING AND MAINTAINING YOUR HENNA / MEHNDI TATTOO DESIGN

1 - Apply a mixture of lemon juice and sugar with a q-tip or cotton ball to the design keeping it moist, be careful not to apply to much or the paste will run. *Alternate with warm heat (ie: blow dryer, stove burner, or even a candle - be careful of course).

2 - If you are serious about wanting a dark long lasting design, keep the henna on for at least 6 hours or longer if you can. The longer the better.

3 - The above 2 suggestions may test your patience, but they are highly effective! After sufficient time, gently pick or scrape the the henna off with the back of a butter knife or finger, DO NOT wash off unless you decide you want a lighter design or you left the paste on overnight.

4 - After you remove the henna, you may gently (there's that word again) rinse the area with warm water to remove the sticky lemon/sugar, apply oil if you have it.

5 -Try not to use soap on the area for at least a day, this allows the henna to completely absorb into the skin.

When i got mine,it lasted about a week.

When you take a shower try not to put soap on it or scrub it.
Part of the reason mine came off so soon is because i got in the ocean about 2 hours after.
They say salt water loosens it up.
