Stupid question, I just bought a back up HDD & plan to store my dvd collection there but not in DVD format but rather in another format. My software can convert it to MPEG2, MPEG1, avi/divx & several others. what's the best format to choose?

Well for space wise and low quality go with MP4. If you want high quality but storage is not a problem go with avi/divx they provide high quality.
