New Jersey is in the Northeast. The Northeast is broken down into a number of regions, and NJ is considered to be in the Mid-Atlantic region, as opposed to New England.

I believe central east would the correct term. Looking on a map it seems to be in a central geograhic location. Northeast New Jersey would be north of I-78 towards Newton. Southeast NJ is the Delaware Bay.

EDIT: Oh wait I misread read the question. Trenton is central east NJ, but New Jersey is in the northeast. Got that?
