I was away for two weeks, nowhere near a computer, and now my top contributor badge is gone. No one has "moved up in the ranks" in my top answerer categories, and I've received 5 or 6 more Best Answer messages since I've been back. Not upset, just curious how it works.

The top contributor badge is dynamic , you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to feature community members who might otherwise be overlooked.
You gain the badge by actively posting decent and detailed answers to a specialist topic. The more your post gains positive marks , the more likely it is you will get a badge
No one knows the formula yahoo uses to calculate the standard to met a top contributor , however we know all Top contributors supply a lot of high quality answers , and therefore this implies it is a mixture of points , best answer percentage and level. http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-d8pH0dcoRKeB12yOcnUQp.9VCFos;_ylt=AhZzkJc8w3crCXEtBBwscVHpy6IX?p=19664 http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/answers/network/contributor.html
It has nothing to do with your "top answerer" category. It has to do with consistent contribution (answers) to a section and consistent Best Answers received for them. So, being idle for 2 weeks CAN cause you to lose it. But you can easily regain it, as well, by going back and contributing as you normally did.
