to add a bathroom to your house and get it inspected by the local govt. do you have to be a liscened plumber?

if i wanted to add a bathroom to my basement and make sure it was all legal and inspected and all that would i have to be a liscensed plumber+electriction to do it myself legally? I know some people do remodeling without getting it cleared with the local building inspecters is this the reason why? specifically a house im thinking about buying in hampshire county west virginia.

Most states allow homeowners the opportunity to add on to their own homes. They may hassle you, but if you insist you can usually do it. The trick is, are you confident that you can do it? They will not pass shoddy workmanship.

Most everywhere requires you to pull a permit to modify the plumbing or electrical. I mostly know only about the plumbing and this will be the bulk of your job. Even if you plan on doing this work yourself, you still need a permit and inspection for it to be a legal modification. You will need to know all the codes and how the plumbing should be put in order to get the proper water pressure and drainage. A state licensed inspector will come out and tell you whether or not it is up to code but if I were you, unless you are extremely up to date on codes, I would hire professionals. It takes a Master Plumber to be able to do work as a business and pull a permit.

Depends on the area, but generally- no. Course the inspector is going to look at your work more closely then a licensed plumber/electrician so be close as you can to the law.

I would suggest that you go down first thing and talk to an inspector, find out what they are looking for and generally, just try to gain an ally or friendly face when you call for the inspection. After everything is said and done you might want to retain the relationship, just to keep the avenue open and peaceful for future work.

Good luck

Different municipalities have different building codes. You need to call the building inspectors office and ask. If they do allow you to do your own work, ask the price of the permit. A lot of people don't get it cleared because they don't want to pay for a permit. If you don't get it inspected, just make sure that you are doing everything correctly so you don't have any problems later- especially with the electrical. Also with the plumbing so you don't get any sewer gas escaping into your house.

Home owners can pull their own permits. You being the homeowner will have to get your work inspected. The inspectors will inspect the work and if it is not up to code you will not pass inspection which could lead to whole buch of hassle. If you hire a plumber and anything is wrong with the work he is responsable for getting the work up to code.
