Insurance is one of those things where you truly get what you pay for. Face it, if you never have an accident you don't even NEED insurance, but if you suddenly find your car sliding on a wet road and crash into an RV full of old people on their way to play bingo you will be damn glad you have it. The quality of a companies claims force is the true measure on how good they really are. State Farm, despite their usually higher than normal rates, has consistantly scored in the top three in the nation for decades concerning fair and excellent claims practices. Face it, who else is equipped to help you if you collide with a tractor on a Sundy afternoon in Gulleywash, Idaho. You can bet there will be at least one agent in town and there is always a claims office in the area. The size of State Farm's claims staff, research dept., legal dept., investigative unit and agency system is staggering and they have the clout and money to stand behind you all the way to the mat if need be. so I guess what I'm saying is that insurance doesn't COST, it PAYS...

I've had progressive for a few years now...umm about 3 or so, and I can't complain. The rates on my policy were actually lowered this year which helped out a lot with the bills and I had my first claim about 2 or so months ago when a piece of wood got flung up from the road to my car by another car that was passing me and put a hole right in my door. It was 1500 bucks in damage and I only had to pay 100 dollar deductible.

Progressive and Geico make me think of working with machines. I think it is more important to have a rep you can feel confident with and can trust. I have never had either of the companies you name, but I have had many different insurance policies. When I call my farmers insurance agent, Max, I know my problems are done. I know him. I visit him. I talk to him. He knows who I am. He makes my problems go away. You need someone like that, who will take the problems away from you. I recommend a local rep. Ask your friends, associates, whoever. There are good ones out there.

I think Allstate is the best. I've been with them for number of years and their rates always seem to beat the competition. But you need to have a good driving record. After 3 years accident free I believe they will allow you one free accident (i.e. benefit of the doubt from a rate increase perspective).

In my experience State Farm is always more expensive than Allstate, to about 25% even for me (I've had many years of accident free). Also I know of similar situations where State Farm has refused to pay a claim where Allstate has paid it in the same circumstance.

Stick with the big companies with good reputations and decent rates; You don't want to risk getting into a situation where you saved a lot of money on your rates...but get into a pickle because the no-name co. you're with won't pay your claim or cover you in a liability situation.

Good Luck :)
