1987 Merkur problem.won't shut off?

Question

Car quit at stoplight-- wouldn't restart- towed to repair place-ran diagnostic- fire into distributor, no fire out- replaced distributor with rebuilt--car ran OK but somewhat sluggish.
next day-- car started fine-- ran warm like fan might not work --no turnsignals-cannot shut offengine with key--back to repair place-- run another diagnostic,cannot find problem.

Thinking problem in ignition switch or steering column- wondering if there ever was distributor problem...

I can't answer your question, but congratulations on describing the problem so succinctly! You must have training in automotive and writing to be able to say what you did. Obviously if the engine won't shut off with the key off, there is likely an ignition switch problem. Check http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/MaintenanceServlet
for manufacturer's Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) on that problem. Also register your car at http://www.mycarstats.com and see if other owners have had the same complaint.

If there was a fire in the distributor, it had to be replaced. Did any wires or "connector pins" get shorted out? Any time there is a fire, often two wires "weld" themselves together. On diagnostic scanners, especially with older vehicles, not much will come up.
My bad, Voltage in nothing out. Start looking at the ignition control module.
