Believe it or not, until the 1960s there was no mechanism to replace a vice president who had died or who had become president. If the office was vacant, it just stayed vacant until the next election. This happened maybe eight or nine times during our nation's hisotry.

After JFK was assassinated, the country adopted the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which allows for replacement of a vice president who resigns. In 1973 Gerald Ford was appointed vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned. Then he became president when Richard Nixon resigned, and Nelson Rockefeller was appointed vice president.

The president nominates someone for vice president, who then needs to be confirmed by both houses of Congress.

I was alive when all this happened in the 70s. It was a strange time.

That's a damn good question! At first I thought you were missing something but researching it myself I see that you're right - he never had a VP after succeeding to office following Garfield's assassination.

Inquiring minds want to know! And if you find it out may I suggest you update www.wikipedia.org for the Chester A. Arthur entry?
