The most mainstream reason is for parking meters.

Coins also outlive bills. Bills don't last very long in circulation, but coins can last a lifetime. The long term cost of coins is much cheaper then bills.

You mean Canadian loonies? It's because they're easier to use in vending machines and last longer than paper bills, I suppose.
