I am planning a trip to Jamaica in April 2008. i posted some question before that were very helpfull but when i started asking my friends the all say that Kingston is bettter. i had set my heart on Montego Bay (Royal Decameron or Breeze) but know am unsure where on jamaica to go so any info will help should i go to Montego Bay or Kingston? pros and cons on both thanks

Kingston is the capital and the cultural center of Jamaica. However, it is not geared to tourists, so there is not as much police protection in some areas. There are some very dangerous sections that you would not want to visit. Kingston is definitely worth the trip but I'd suggest you go there only if you have a trustworthy, local guide.

The pro of Montego Bay is that it's got the tourists flying in, the con is there really isn't any "downtown"--it's all spread out. The pros of Kingston are it's the capital and has Devin House (old plantation house) and Bob Marley Museum, the cons are crime, lack of tourists. About 6 hours in Kingston and you've seen everything (not counting Port Royal which had the distinction of being the deadliest town in the Caribbean during the era of the pirates). If the real question is where to go in Jamaicamon, I'd suggest Negril (if you want to party), Ocho Rios (near Dunn's River Falls) or Port Antonio (nature and relax). Of course, a lot depends on what you want to do. If you want beach, forget Kingston--the few around are polluted. I'd double check the validity of your friends that say that Kingston is better (i.e. ask very specific questions and ask how they know; have they ever been to Kingston and Montego Bay; etc.)

Definately Kingston. The museum, the studio and trench town are all in kingston. I woudl however recommend spending SOME part of you stay in either Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. Kingston is just too busy at times (for the purposes of a vacation).
