If an object is moving in an eastward direction and begins to decelerate, what is the direction of a?

Can you explain this using kinematics?

Also, can you explain the difference between a negative acceleration that results from a change in direction and a negative acceleration that results from a change in magnitude?

Thank you!

Acceleration is directly proportional to force, so if there is a force making it decelerate (I'll assume is moving on a flat surface) then the force would be opposite, thus westward and acceleration would be westward. However, velocity continues eastward.

Do you really want to know this or is this a clever way to get us to answer your homework question??? Hmmmmmmm
