Ideas for kids? See details...?

I teach for an after school program and we want to adopt a nursing home. I want to teach these kids about giving back to their community and how to respect their elders in a different fashion. I teach the art program there. What kinds of crafts can these kids make for the residents. The kids ages range from K-5th grade.

This is very important to me and I believe it will make a huge impact on the lives of these kids. I really need some good ideas so please, serious replies only. Think with your hearts. Think of what you would like if you were in a home with no visitors.

Thank you so much in advance.

We recently had to place my grandmother in a nursing home and I can tell you that one thing that really cheered her up is having pictures of the family around. So what I suggest is, take the kids on a field trip to meet some of the residents and take lots of pictures, especially of the children talking and interacting with the residents (and make sure to get their names). Then come back and make cute little picture frames to post their pictures in to give to the residents and, if possible, make 1 or 2 big scrapbooks with a collection of the pictures for everyone to enjoy. An easy way to do that is have each of the kids put together one or two pages of the scrap book themselves, maybe even include letters they've written or little notes about their trip. It's not a terribly huge project, but it'll make a difference. And if you're looking for projects that the children and the residents can do together, why not look into little painting projects? Any craft store will sell all the basic essentials and you could even do something as simple as painting their palms to handprint small tiles. It's inexpensive and very simple to do.

Good luck and kudos on a great community-outreach program with your kids!
