What was the original " Mother-In-Law"???

Detective Tom answered a question about the best hot dogs
in Chicago and he mentioned 73rd & Western and the mother-in-law this place makes that he stated was a tamale on a bun w/ chile. My 1st introduction to a Mother-In-Law was over 40
years ago at a hot dog stand at 47th & Washtenaw and it was
& still is today A Tom Tom tamale in a cup filled w/ chile. My
mother loved them till the day she died. I've introduced the
meal to a few places in California .
So, what came 1st the cup or the bun?

Here is a link to an article from the Chicago Tribune last week on the mother-in-law. As it states it is a South Side creation first started in the 1950's. It looks like the bun came before the cup.
