Well it is not full proof, but, if he is a house dog like mine, I was told time outs. Go get him when he is barking. I dont like cold weather so I used another method, I threw a cup of water on her when she was outside and told her "quiet smokey". She doesnt like water. Some do. Now I also use "thank you Smokey" in the house - which basically means "shut up". It is just their nature to bark and I allow her her time to do this. Maybe I am wrong - I dont know - but - he wants to protect as my little girl does and I feel if your neighbors can take a couple hours early - till maybe 11 p m - go with that. Smokey will quit - but - Not sure I want her to. I got her for her protection as well as her beauty! But - the independence is tough! I respect her - but you can get control! Have you been to training? Alot of what they tell you works, but alot doesnt because of the breed. He is young enough to start and I suggest you do it now. If he doesnt like water, well 2 cups of "quiet Smokey" did it for her. But you must remember - they are "warding off" any intruders....Show more

My husband and I have two Great Pyrenees. We just moved from 22 acres to a small house with a regular sized backyard. We moved for my husbands job and cannot afford acreage in the area we moved to, otherwise we would have found a home with lots of land so our dogs could have sheep or goats to protect (this is when they are happiest) We knew barking would be an issue but these dogs are "family" and we would never re-home them. Our dogs had a job when we had land but now they are bored. My husband and I have not slept a full night since we moved to the smaller property due to our dogs barking. We realize it will be an adjustment but we are at our wits end. I am ready to research what type of device I should use to keep my dogs from barking. I don't expect them to completely stop since their natural instincts ARE to protect. They never bark just for the sake of hearing themselves. They never bark for hours on end. If you have found something that works, PLEASE tell me what and where to find the device. I have read reviews on citronella collars. There are mixed reviews everywhere. Most of the favorable reviews for this type of device seem to be that they work for smaller breeds. But the reviews for the devices themselves are not good. Most folks say they need to order the same product repeatedly due to leakage of the citronella. Help!...Show more

Our newly adopted schnauzer does the same thing and it drives us up a wall.
Our schnauzer before him did not do this.
For right now, we tell him NO firmly.
I don't know if there is really any cure for it.
There are some really nasty looking contraptions out there that supposedly stops them from barking, but I won't get it.
Try the "no" thing and see what happens.
The next thing I will do is get a spray bottle of water and use that each time and say no.
Bottle of water (spray) is a good learning tool, but don't spray in the face....Show more

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances....Show more
