Has anyone else had trouble with their Xbox 360 not working?
My son has had his Xbox 360 for only 5 months. He takes very good care of it. The machine started freezing up all the time. The other night it quit, and the lights around the start button went red. I called the company, and they pretty much told me that this is common. They have agreed to fix it for free, and extend the warranty for 3 years. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problems? I'm frustrated after spending $400 for the system. I'm glad they will fix it,but I feel like they owe it to their customers to make everyone aware that this is a glitch with their system. How do you feel about it?

That problem is very common. ITs called the red rings of death. You son could have babied his xbox and it could still get the problem.
Around 20-40% of xbox 360's have this problem. I actually know someone who is on their 5th 360 becasue he experienced the same problem as your son did.
Also the 3 year warretny is for a 360's becasuse Microsoft's poor made system is well know for this glitch due to poor quality parts. To let you know how common this is Mcirosoft has spent over1 BILLION dollars for the warrenty so expect the 360 to break again.
Microsoft has never admitted their system has a major problem they deny it actually. In my opinion they should do a total recall for a 360's becasue this problem is way to common.
Microsoft has even blamed the problem on us the consumer! They said that one cause of the red rings was that you cord that plugs into a wall should be plugged into the wall not any extenstion cord, safety adapters. Just the wall! Pretty rediculas if you ask me.
I suggest you should consider buy a PSP, DS,Wii or PS3 for your son because us as costumers dont really have to put up with this problem. Also all of the above systems dont have any major problems like the 360 and have similar games.
If you do not wish to buy a new system jsut wait till the system si approaching the end of the 3 year warrenty then sell it ASAP. Then buy a new 360 for you could get another 360 with a warrenty.
-Also i suggest with your 360 make sure that your 360 has lots of air dont put it in an enclosed space. -dont buy attachments to flow more air into the console. I saw 360's tha got so hot that it actually melted the attachment on the 360 -also make sure the room is cool when you play it -lastly dont play the 360 for long periods of time to reduce overheating. play for an hour take a break and let it cool down
(hope these tips help)
Also have claimed to put a better parts in the newly release 360's made after september 2007. It supposible has a new CPU that reduces heat. but the problem is still their!
Lastly to show ou how bad this problem is Gamestop and EB Games have refused to give extended warrenties on 360 consoles becasue of this problem while all other consoles you can purchase extended warrenties.
mine froze up once, fortunately i didn't get the red lights, im pretty sure im going to get it sooner or later ..hopefully later lol..but yeah, that sucks, i'll probably feel the same way you do if/when i get the red lights... but they did explain about the red lights, that's the reason why they extended the warranty to 3 years. So if any 360 owners gets the red lights, they'll "fix it" for free. Unfortunately, they still don't really know whats causing the red lights(hardware failure), so they'll probably just send you a new one back. They are making new 360's with a smaller chip though, this will supposedly help the 360 not overheat and last longer.
there are some things you and your son can do to try and prevent this from happening again. just make sure the 360 is on a hard, clean, stable, surface, don't put it on a rug/carpet. don't put it in a shelf where it can hardly breathe, make sure it has plenty of room. keep it dust-free. don't abuse it(playing for over 5hrs). keep it in a cool room, don't put it in a room where it gets too warm.
My boyfriend's xbox has begun doing the same thing. He'd go to turn it on and it wouldn't turn on and there would be a red ring of lights. I agree they should warn their customers of glitches that have not been fixed before selling such an expensive gaming unit. I am glad to know that they will fix it, he was worried he would have to spend big bucks to fix it if it continued to mess up. Is the glitch something that will worsen with time if not fixed soon?
yea its common. this has happened to alot of people i know. just not me....yet. i was reading a article in game informer a few months ago about a glitch or something that microsoft found in the newer systems them shipped out in the past year...i dunno. Also if he is using a ventilator fan thing on the back that you plug into the power input spot and then plug the cord into that it could be the fan. the red ring just lets you know something is wrong. i feel like its stupid but an understandable mistake
This has been happening a lot lately. These "rings of death" as they are called are becoming more and more common. Ways to make it work longer are: make sure the heat has a place to escape. dont play 2 much at a time, and dont leave it on when u go outta the house.
