What is causing my EGR to melt?

1988 Buick Lasabre. Got it for free from a friend who was tired of replacing the EGR valve. We spent $185 3 weeks ago to put in a new one. Car passed inspection. Looked under the hood today and saw that the dang EGR had literally melted! The wiring looks fine. Could this be caused by a plugged exhaust system, or just a defective EGR?

I'm just taking a guess but check for a clogged exhaust system. Install a vacuum gauge to mainifold vacuum. Let the car idle. If the gauge gradually drops there is a blockage in the exhaust causing excessive back pressure.

Sounds like Valve is not getting signal and over heating its job is to keep ttemps down. check vacume lines for leaks and the map sensor connections.
