Well, assuming they exist, mermaids eating fish would be the same as humans eating monkeys. It's not cannibalism, but perhaps too close for some. There are humans who eat monkeys, but not many, and if you're talking about a whole underwater civilization, having evolved at the same rate and as similar a way as the difference in the environments allows, then the answer would most likely be yes, they do. Also you have to take into consideration the lack of alternate food sources, since in order for that society to have gone undetected by us it would have to be so far underwater there'd be little sunlight and little photosynthesis-using plant matter available for consumption. They could have evolved to eat other things, but that would require them to have very different digestive systems, and the further you stray from our physiology, the less you look like us on the outside too. On image, science and mythology alone I'd have to say yes, they would rather eat fish!

What Does Mermaids Eat

They have human teeth, so they have the carnivorous teeth, or meat molars if u like. Whilst in their fish state, they would eat anything fishy that comes their way, a bit like some sharks, as survival of the fittest is in their nature. They might become conscience of what they've eaten when out of the water, but in the ocean instinct would take over.

In Cornwall, UK, they are particularly fond of oggies and have been known to come ashore on balmy evenings trying to persuade eligible young men to purchase one for them. Should you be lucky enough to see a starving mermaid lying in a provocative position by the seashore, be sure to offer her an oggie or she might place a curse on you. Provision of the oggie will usually be rewarded by a promise that you will never drown. You might even be lucky and get a wet cuddle.
