my brother just took a cat scan recently , and said that the nurse told him over the phone that he had a?

growth on his left kidney , no biopsy done to my knowledge , i know this could be cancer but i am hoping for a lesser severe prognosis , if it is cancer , how difficult is it to operate on this , and what are other possible diagnosises .unfortunately he has been a life long smooker , and occasional drinker . overall not too health conscious .

It could be a cyst, but then I think the nurse would have called it that and not a "growth," which implies a solid mass. If it is a mass, they probably will go for a biopsy. Not to freak you out, here is a website for some information : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renal_cell_carcinoma

like many cancers, there are a lot of different things involved in diagnosis and treatment. Good luck to your brother.

A biopsy is the only way to tell if it is cancer. If it is cancer it may or may not be kidney cancer. If it is kidney cancer, the kidney is usually removed as the first step in treatment.
