Do you look for the silver lining?

Post ice storm which knocked out our electicity for 6 days, put a tree limb thru the roof of the back porch, and took out a couple of trees and a LOT of limbs, I'm looking around and thinking that we may have gotten our porch damaged, but we did need a new roof on it and now the insurance will pay for it: we lost a huge limb from an elm, but now there will be more sun to the herb garden, which really did need it. I found a buffalo roast in the ref freezer, which I had lost track of, and it sure was good, because it was thawed and I had to cook it. I got a lot of yard work done and leaves raked, since I already had a fire going burning fallen branches. All that work kinda got me back in shape after slacking off this fall, lol! Do you look for the silver lining in what could be perceived as disasters?

We had a kerosene heater so we were pretty cozy, just inconvenienced w/ no power. And no internet, lol! But there were lots of people in shelters, and some homes were really damaged. 58,000 homes w/o power, plus businesses. We were on the LAST of the list to have power restored, felt like stepchildren! Jasper Co Mo was really hit bad, plus some counties north of us and some in Kansas west of here also. I hadn't heard much about OK because we had no tv, sorry to hear you had it bad there too.

We thought about a generator, but there were none available, all sold out! But we decided we didn't need one that bad anyway. $7.50 a gal for kerosene was bad enough!

we do have a natural gas range, so we could cook. And we ate pretty well!

Oh my gosh....every single day ! One of my boys is autistic and can single handedly take apart a house. I'm not talking extra vacuming I'm talking get out the hammer and nails and repairing . He has flooded our kitchen so many times and the master bath that our ceiling and hardwoods are now all being replaced. As we started repairs a huge tree's roots went through the plumbing lines outside and lifted the hardwoods in the hallway to the entrance and lower bath . Lots of repairs right before Christmas but today I almost finished the lower bath painted it a new color and finished laying tile and ya know what ? I love the change and feel like I accomplished alot today . The destructive child well ,he's a keeper. He never really would intentionally harm anyone and he sure does keep this house interesting. Those big brown eyes of his are my silver lining!

Sorry to hear about all you folks back there going through this icy snow storm mess. My heart is with you all. Hope things are looking better for you all. I know some of you are still without electricity, and that makes it really hard with the cold.
I know I would just die, with all the cold back there. I am a California girl through and through. My son does live in Chicago and I get tidbits from him on the weather. He is a flight attendent out of Midway, and says traffice coming out of far east is causing troubles. Not so much Midway, which is not as bad as O'hare which gets it worse.
Only problem is we here in No. Calif are looking at a heavy rain storm coming in tonight (Sun) and it will last all week. Which means another storm will be heading your way again.
Batten down the hatches, and brace for another one I'm afraid. Good Luck to you all, back there.

isadora, you fortunately told us to expect your absence if things got bad. and things got bad.

Thanks for your report from the scene. I have to say there are times when I'm glad to be in Florida, even if I do have to put up with idiot yuppies and rednecks. I went thru a portion of the Katrina event but didn't have the issues YOU dealt with! Hope you and hubby have warm feet tonight!

The buffalo roast is a funny tidbit. HOW did you cook it? And the stuff in the freezer thawed? In THAT weather?

As for all the yard work .... well, I guess ... but really - wouldn't you rather find better ways to stop huffing and puffing?

Your ice storm did more damage than the 3 hurricanes that hit me ( Francis , Jeanne and Wilma ) in 2004 & 2005. My silver lining was that we still had a house, business, and 85% of our customers were still in operating mode.
