Do I have a milk intolerance?

I'm not sure if I have a milk or lactose intolerance. I can have milk in tea and I'll be fine but I can't have it on it's own or on cereal because it makes me really ill. I get bloated, nauseous, indigestion and bad stomach pains.

I can still eat cheese and chocolate.

I made some home made muffins the other day where I had to put milk in them and they made me ill too.

I'm not sure if I have an intolerance because I'm fine when I have milk in tea. Maybe the other ingredients in the tea water down the milk?

I don't know. :S Does it sound like I have an intolerance?

Just managed to buy some "Lactofree" milk from Tesco. So far no nausea or stomach cramps etc so I think I am lactose intolerant.

I'm an allergist, and no, this doesn't sound like a food allergy, more a lactose intolerance, like others have said. We all have a threshold for digesting the milk sugar, or lactose, and it sounds like you can tolerate lower levels of milk sugar, but not the higher amounts, i.e. a glass of milk or milk in cereal. You have some ability to break down the sugar, but your body gets overwhelmed when you eat/drink too much. So don't go out and eat a whole pizza! As for things that can help, I agree with the Lactaid milk, and you can take the enzyme in the form of a pill before eating large amounts of milk-containing foods. This isn't a hormone/drug-treating-cow problem, it's in the milk itself. Hope this helps!

Maybe you have intolerance with fat. Because as we know, tea could reduce fat (some people drink tea for their diet). So I suggest you to try a non-fat milk.

But if the milk is non-fat please answer the question below.
1. You have to make sure, do you have intolerance with one kind of milk brand or all kinds of milk?
2. When did the illness start? Since you were a kid or ...?
3. Do you have milk with empty stomach or not?
4. What kind of milk do you have? Does it contain fat or lactose?
5. When you drink milk with tea and when you have milk with cereal, etc, do you put sugar in them?
6. Do you feel the illness EVERY-SINGLE-TIME you have milk?
7. Have you consult with your doctor? What did he say?

Well, after you give me the answers maybe I can make the conclusion -- or maybe you can realize it yourself!!

PS : Cheese and chocolate contain fat too, but of course pure milk contains more. That's why you have no problem with cheese and chocolate.

You could be allergic to it. A lot of people are and here is some more info on milk especially if you continue to drink it.

It does sound like you are lactose intolerent.Milk being the main source of the problem.I think ice cream isnt your friend either.The milk in the tea thing works for you because the milk is broken down, but in the muffins, there were probably not enough liquids to dilute the milk that was in it.

Sounds like it to me... I developed an intolerance to certain dairy products a few years ago. (Your body runs out of the lactase needed to digest the lactose in the dairy!) I can still eat cheese and some things, but milk and ice cream kill me with stomach pains. Try LACTAID, it is an over-the-counter supplement that can help. A lot of stores also have store-brand which is a lot cheaper. When I HAVE to have my ice cream fix, I take the Lactaid, and it helps immensely! Good luck! :)
